Prince William Shares Insights on His Children’s Musical Journey

Prince William, the Prince of Wales, recently shared his thoughts on the importance of music in his children's lives during a royal engagement. The 43-year-old royal emphasized that it is "really important" for his kids to learn music, highlighting how it has shaped their development and interests.

During a visit to Spiral Skills, a youth group in Lambeth, William spoke about his children's musical talents. The organization, which has received funding from the Homewards Fund, aims to support young people in the area. The Homewards Fund is part of William’s broader campaign to address homelessness in the UK. The grant allowed Spiral Skills to move into a new space at The Oasis Village, where the royal met with young musicians.

William was particularly interested in hearing about the musical abilities of his children—Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7. He mentioned that while he himself struggled with reading music, he made sure his children were exposed to instruments from an early age.

A Drummer’s Humble Beginnings

At the event, William was invited by Django Brooke, a 16-year-old musician, to play the drums. However, he politely declined, joking that his youngest son, Prince Louis, would be better suited for the task. “I’m definitely not a drummer. I’m happy to see you do it. If my youngest was here, he’d have a go, because he’s practicing at the moment,” William said. He added, “But thank you for asking.”

After Brooke performed, William laughed and remarked, “And that’s why you play, and I don’t!” The prince also shared more about his own musical journey, admitting that he had difficulty reading music and often relied on memorization. “I wish I started when I was your age. I couldn’t read music, so that was my biggest weakness,” he told young musicians participating in a workshop.

Music as a Family Value

William emphasized that music is something he values deeply and wants to pass on to his children. “I make sure my children learn music because I love music, and it’s crucial — really important,” he said.

Seth Pinnock, founder of Symphony Studios, echoed this sentiment, noting that while William may not have been a skilled drummer, his children are learning to play keys. “Hopefully his kids will come here one day and learn,” Pinnock added.

Prince Louis and the Drums

Prince Louis, the youngest of the royal children, has taken up the drums, much to William’s amusement. During an interview with Rolling Stones bassist Ronnie Wood and former Dire Straits guitarist Mark Knopfler at the Tusk Awards in London in November 2024, William joked about the noise his son creates. “My youngest is learning the drums. That’s why I spend my entire life with my fingers in my ears,” he said.

Other Royal Musical Talents

Prince George and Princess Charlotte have also shown an interest in music. During a concert timed to Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022, Kate Middleton revealed that Prince George had been taking electric guitar lessons, while Princess Charlotte was practicing the piano.

Kate herself has a hidden talent for piano. At her inaugural Together at Christmas carol service in December 2021, she joined singer Tom Walker on the keys during a surprise performance. The idea for the performance came from Kate, who learned piano as a child and found comfort in playing during the pandemic.

“Music was very important to the Duchess during the lockdowns,” a royal source said at the time. “She also recognizes the powerful way in which music brings people together — especially during difficult times.”

In 2023, Kate contributed a short piano performance to the opening sequence film of the Eurovision Song Contest, further showcasing her musical abilities.
