Karpowership Celebrates Education Day with Powership Tour for TTU Engineering Students

Karpowership Ghana Celebrates International Day of Education with Engineering Students
Karpowership Ghana recently marked the International Day of Education by organizing a unique experience for engineering students from Takoradi Technical University (TTU). These students, who are recipients of the company’s scholarship program, were given an exclusive tour of the Powership, offering them a firsthand look into the world of power generation.
The International Day of Education, initiated by UNESCO and observed annually on January 24, was celebrated this year under the theme “The Power of Youth in Co-Creating Education.” This theme emphasizes the vital role that young people play as active participants in shaping education systems that are inclusive, relevant, and future-oriented.
In line with this global initiative, Karpowership Ghana designed the Powership tour to place students at the center of the learning process. The event aimed to expose them to real-life operations within the power generation industry, allowing them to connect theoretical knowledge with practical applications. This approach not only deepened their understanding of classroom concepts but also provided valuable insights into industry practices through direct interaction with professionals.
Sandra Amarquaye, the Communications Manager of Karpowership Ghana, highlighted the significance of involving young people in the educational process. She stated that the company believes education is most impactful when students actively shape their learning journeys.
“The International Day of Education reminds us that young people are not just recipients of education, but key partners in co-creating it. By opening our operations to these students, we are giving them the opportunity to bridge the gap between classroom knowledge and industry practice,” she said.
Amarquaye further emphasized that Karpowership Ghana's commitment to education extends beyond financial support. The company focuses on providing exposure, mentorship, and hands-on learning opportunities to empower young individuals.
“Our scholarship scheme is not only about funding education. It is about equipping young people with the confidence, skills, and real-world exposure they need to become problem-solvers and contributors to Ghana’s development,” she added.
Practical Learning Experience
During the tour, students were guided through various aspects of power generation and engineering operations aboard the Powership. Technical personnel provided detailed explanations of systems and processes, while engaging students in interactive discussions and answering their questions.
Ing. Hawa Assanpong, the Coordinator of Women in Engineering (WinE) at Takoradi Technical University, praised Karpowership Ghana for strengthening the collaboration between academia and industry.
“This visit has given the students practical insight into how power generation works, while also exposing them to safety and environmental standards within the industry. Experiences like this help deepen their understanding beyond the classroom,” she said.
Faustina Fianudzu, a Level 300 Electrical Engineering student at TTU, described the visit as a transformative learning experience.
“This tour has helped me appreciate how the concepts we learn in class are applied in real-world engineering practice,” she said.
Faustina also shared how interacting with engineers and a female chemist on board the Powership renewed her motivation and confidence in pursuing a career in engineering. She expressed gratitude to Karpowership Ghana for the scholarship support, which continues to play a crucial role in her academic journey.
Broader Corporate Social Responsibility Initiatives
Karpowership Ghana’s commemoration of the International Day of Education is part of its broader Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, which prioritize education as a catalyst for sustainable development.
Through its scholarship scheme, mentorship programs, and experiential learning engagements, the company continues to support inclusive and equitable education while empowering young people to actively participate in shaping their future. This aligns with the true spirit of this year’s International Day of Education theme, emphasizing the importance of youth in co-creating education.
