The results reveal that pepperoni is still the most popular choice, with 41% of Brits selecting this meaty topping. Mozzarella follows closely behind at 36%, while chicken comes in third at 30%. The survey also addressed the age-old question of whether pineapple belongs on pizza, with over half of respondents saying yes—despite the fruit not making it into the top ten.

The survey highlights a shift in British eating habits, with more people opting for "posh pizzas" featuring sourdough bases, artisanal toppings, and wood-fired crusts. Roly Simpson, founder of East Pizzas, commented on this trend: “Pepperoni is still Britain’s favorite pizza topping, but the tide is turning. With 64% of us now choosing posh pizzas, the top ten could look very different in a few years.”

Gen Z has emerged as a strong advocate for pizza, with the food being their favorite. Whether it's a classic Margherita, a posh creation, or a bold signature dish, pizza continues to bring people together. The demand for premium toppings such as hot honey, burrata, and nduja is on the rise, as consumers move away from mass-brand takeaways and seek fresher, healthier options.

Changing Trends in Pizza Consumption

Interestingly, the research also shows a growing preference for cooking pizza at home rather than relying on takeaways. Three-quarters of respondents have ditched mass-brand takeaways, citing reasons such as cost, lack of freshness, and a desire for healthier meals. As a result, more Brits are embracing the role of a 'pizzaiolo,' with 32% making their own pizza from scratch or purchasing pre-made dough balls or bases.

Less than one in five now order in, reflecting a shift in consumer behavior. Roly Simpson added, “As a nation, we love pizza, but we're getting a bit more thoughtful about what goes into it. Our research shows that 65% of people are actively choosing food without ultra-processed ingredients, and that's shaping how we eat pizza too.”
