A recent survey by Bupa revealed some concerning statistics. Only 35% of UK adults knew their normal blood pressure range, while just 7% were aware of their heart health score. Additionally, 12% didn’t know their maximum heart rate, and nearly a third couldn’t even state their weight. Despite the fact that 76% of respondents claimed to take their health seriously, less than a third had ever had a cholesterol check, and half had never undergone a proactive blood pressure assessment.
Even more alarming was the lack of knowledge about prescription medications, with 51% unable to name what they were taking, and 59% not knowing their blood type. A shocking 23% had no idea how tall they were. Dr. Powles emphasized the importance of this knowledge, stating that understanding your health can help detect issues early, provide peace of mind, and encourage positive lifestyle changes.
The survey also found that among those who had taken the initiative to get an unprompted health check, 30% discovered previously undetected issues such as anemia, diabetes, high cholesterol, and even cancer.
