Gifted Hands: The Nation's Youngest Family Physician, Dr. Gideon Assan

A Rising Star in Ghana’s Medical Field
In a nation known for its rich pool of talent and potential, it is always inspiring to witness young individuals making significant contributions in their respective fields. On December 10, 2025, one of Ghana’s most promising young medical professionals achieved a remarkable milestone by being inducted as a Family Physician Specialist. Dr Gideon Kwame Assan, who has already made a name for himself in the medical community, became the youngest Family Physician Specialist in the 2025 cohort of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons.
This achievement came just months after he was inducted into the West Africa College of Physicians and Surgeons, marking a significant step in his professional journey. His story is one of perseverance, hard work, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
From Humble Beginnings to Academic Excellence
Born to Francis Kwaku Assan and Gloria Assan, who passed away, Gideon grew up in a small town called Akrokerri, near Obuasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. His parents, both teachers, instilled in him the value of education from an early age. This foundation helped shape his academic trajectory, leading him to complete his basic education at Holy Child Preparatory School in Obuasi.
His exceptional performance in academics earned him a place at Mfantsipim School, one of Ghana's premier secondary institutions. As a science student, Gideon quickly distinguished himself, joining the school’s National Science and Maths Quiz team—a rare privilege reserved for only the most talented students. Although the competition was not held during his year, his passion for learning remained undeterred.
A Shift in Career Path
Initially, Gideon considered a career in engineering, enrolling in a Petrochemical Engineering program at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. However, fate had other plans. Influenced by his mother's encouragement and his own curiosity, he shifted his focus to medicine, enrolling at the University of Cape Coast in 2013. This decision marked a turning point in his life, setting him on a path that would ultimately lead to his current achievements.
Innovating Public Health Through Technology
Dr. Assan’s dedication to medicine extends beyond clinical practice. He has focused his research on hypertensive, infectious, and chronic diseases, driven by a desire to make a meaningful impact on public health. His innovative approach includes leveraging digital tools to educate the public about health myths and misconceptions.
In 2021, he launched the Health Quarters Ghana initiative, using digital media and viral comic skits to spread vital health information. His efforts have not gone unnoticed. He was part of the first Humans for Digital Health Campaign, where his award-winning documentary highlighted gaps in Ghana’s use of digital technology for youth inclusion and efficient patient data management.
Expanding Reach Through New Media
Just two months ago, Dr. Assan began a new podcast under the Health Quarters project, featuring discussions with notable figures and individuals who have experienced various health conditions. This initiative underscores his commitment to using technology to promote public health and reach a broader audience.
Leadership and Professional Growth
Beyond his clinical and technological contributions, Dr. Assan has demonstrated strong leadership abilities. He has served as acting Medical Director at 3M&C Medical Centre in East Legon, Accra, and as Medical Lead for the Ghana-German Specialist Hospital in Amasaman. Recently, he was appointed to the Board of Liberty Medical Health Insurance Limited, further solidifying his role in the healthcare sector.
His leadership journey began during his studies, where he served as President of the University Medical Students Association at the University of Cape Coast and later as Vice President of the Federation of Medical Students’ Association in Ghana.
Continuous Learning and Development
To further enhance his skills, Dr. Assan has participated in several Continuous Professional Development programs. These include a Point of Care Ultrasound training programme organized by Worldwide Radiology in 2022, as well as a recent Medical Care exhibition in Germany. His involvement in various professional groups across Ghana highlights his commitment to fostering better health systems through collaboration and dialogue.
A Bright Future Ahead
Dr. Gideon Assan’s journey is a testament to what can be achieved through dedication, passion, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. As he continues to serve his community with compassion and expertise, his future looks incredibly promising. His contributions to the medical field and public health are a clear reflection of the immense potential within Ghana’s youth.
We eagerly anticipate the continued impact he will make in the years to come, as he continues to inspire others through his work as a Family Physician Specialist.
