Early Life and Family Background
Adebiyi Adesuyi, the Chairman of Wealthgate Global Investments Limited, has a rich and inspiring story that traces back to his childhood. Born on April 20, 1965, in Ilesa, Osun State, he was the son of Mr. Oluyemi Adesuyi and Mrs. Grace Adesuyi. Although his parents were natives of Ile-Oluji, Ondo State, they lived in Ibadan for part of his early years. His father worked as a civil servant in the Ministry of Agriculture, while his mother provided a loving and supportive environment for their children.
Growing up, Adebiyi was raised in a family filled with love and strong Christian values. They lived in staff quarters allocated to workers of the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources at Moor Plantation. This neighborhood allowed him to make friends from various parts of Yorubaland before the creation of states in 1976. The public primary school he attended was known for its high-quality education, which attracted children of prominent individuals in Ibadan.
Education and School Experiences
Adebiyi’s elementary education took place at Ebenezer Primary School in Ago-Taylor, Ibadan, from January 1971 to June 1976. He then moved to Gboluji Grammar School in Ile-Oluji, Ondo State, for his secondary education, where he spent five years from 1976 to 1981. He was placed in the boarding house, an experience that shaped much of his character.
His first day in the boarding house was exciting, and he was assigned to Ogunleye House. A key factor in his adjustment was the presence of his cousin, Mr. Bankole Ige, who helped him navigate the challenges of being a new student. Social gatherings held monthly on Saturdays allowed students to interact freely, creating a sense of community.
Lessons from School Life
The discipline of waking up early, around 5 am, to prepare for classes was a significant part of his school life. As a junior student, he had to fetch water for himself and his college father, and on Saturdays, he engaged in manual labor such as cutting grass and gathering firewood for the school kitchen. These experiences taught him the value of hard work and helped develop good relationships with classmates, seniors, and juniors.
Career in Banking
Adebiyi’s career in banking began at Oceanic Bank, where he received his appointment letter with great joy. Working in the banking sector allowed him to apply what he learned academically. The bank also played a crucial role in his professional development through training programs in various areas of banking and management.
Choosing the Right Path
Initially, his father encouraged him to study medicine, inspired by his uncle, Dr. Samuel Lawrence Adesuyi, who served as the Chief Medical Adviser of Nigeria. However, after not meeting the JAMB cut-off mark for Medicine and Surgery, Adebiyi chose to study Economics or Finance, which he loved due to his A2 grade in Economics at WASCE level. He eventually enrolled in Ondo State University to study Banking and Finance, a decision he credits for the opportunities it brought into his life.
Parental Influence
His father was the disciplinarian in the family, often flogging him when he spent too much time playing instead of studying. His report cards would determine whether he was rewarded or punished, and his father always emphasized academic excellence. One memorable incident involved his father flogging him for reading a dictionary like a textbook instead of using it as a reference.
Meeting His Wife
Adebiyi met his wife, Folasade, through her elder brother, Dr. Niyi Oladele, who was his roommate at Ondo State University. After graduation, Niyi visited him in Lagos, bringing his younger sister along. Their relationship blossomed, and Folasade’s brilliance and elegance captivated him. Her mother, who had known him from university days, gave her a positive impression of his character, helping to solidify their bond.
Advice for Young People
For young people considering their career paths, Adebiyi advises them to evaluate their academic strengths and choose courses that align with their passions and capabilities. He emphasizes the importance of avoiding peer pressure or sibling rivalry when making such decisions, as success comes from following one's true interests and abilities.
