I mean, what?” she said, laughing. “People were pulling out threads of things and they interpreted it in a way, and that’s the fun about it.” She admitted she hadn’t considered the connection before, but she welcomed the creativity.
A Role That Stunned Everyone
Madigan acknowledged that playing Gladys has caused quite a stir. Her character is meme-worthy, deeply engaging, and perfectly portrayed by Madigan. However, she admits that the attention has been overwhelming. “People really like Gladys, they seem they wanna hang out with her,” she said, still chuckling. “It's a big deal to come later on in my life. I'm trying to enjoy it. This is a little nerve-racking for me.”
Despite the attention, Madigan recognized that taking on the role of Gladys was risky. Not only is the character audacious, but the entire project surpassed the scale of Cregger’s previous work, "Barbarian." She noted that Cregger wanted to create something bold and unique, and she embraced the challenge. “Risky is kind of a really fun thing to participate in,” she said. “It was very freeing in a way.”
The Visual Impact of Gladys
One of the most striking aspects of Gladys is her appearance. According to Madigan, the look was carefully crafted to be both terrifying and absurd. Her red lipstick is askew, her face is covered in white pancake makeup, and her wig is bizarre. These elements contribute to some of the film's most memorable jump scares, especially when she appears in the dreams of Justine Gandy and Archer Graff.
The process of developing Gladys’ look took time and effort. Madigan recalls that early tests resulted in an unappealing appearance. “We had the really horrible look,” she said, describing the collaboration with special makeup effects designer Jason Collins and costume designer Trish Summerville. “It took us many hours to figure that out,” she recalled. “I walked in there and everyone just stopped for a minute. They were kind of [she pulls back, laughs] Zach was in sheer delight. 'Cause that's what he was hoping for.”
