Mark Hamill Recalls Demi Moore's Gleeful Reaction to His Pants Falling Down at Award Show

Mark Hamill did his best to use a Jedi mind trick on the audience when his pants started falling down onstage at the BAFTA Film Awards in February.

It definitely didn't work on Demi Moore.

The "Star Wars" legend and star of the new movie "The Life of Chuck" spoke on the 3rd hour of Single Sparkleon June 6 about how Moore did her best to show him some support when he thought maybe no one noticed his pants were falling down.

Hamill, 73, deftly tried to fuss with his pants while presenting an award for best film to "Conclave" director Edward Berger.

"I just went to the teleprompter and read the teleprompter, and the podium was to here, and the most you could see was me pulling them up, unless you were on the side," Hamill told Al Roker, Craig Melvin, Dylan Dreyer and Kaylee Hartung, gesturing toward his waist.

"I looked over to see my wife’s reaction," he continued. "My eyes met Demi Moore’s. When the clip went on, I mouthed the words to Demi, ‘Did you see my pants fall down?’ You know what her reaction was?"

Hamill then held two thumbs up.

"Gleefully," he continued. "I was so mortified, but like I say, it was mind over matter that you did not see that happen."

Hamill tried to be like Obi-Wan Kenobi tricking stormtroopers in "Star Wars" to get the audience to ignore the fact that his trousers were tumbling to his knees behind the podium.

"It’s every actor’s nightmare, but I thought, 'I’m going to will it out of existence,'" Hamill said. "'You did not see that.'"

"These are not the pants you’re looking for," Al joked in a play on one of Obi-Wan Kenobi's lines in "Star Wars."

Everything was seemingly fine with Hamill's wardrobe until shortly before the ceremony run by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

"I tried those pants on twice," he said. "Once in California when they fitted me, and he says, 'How are they?' And I said, 'Well they're a little snug.' He goes, 'I'll let 'em out a skosh.'

"The next time I put them on was 20 minutes before we were supposed to get into the car to go to the BAFTAs. He let them out 5 inches!"

An improvised solution was unable to hold up.

"Luckily, Mary was with us, my dresser, and she did a safety pin in the back, but as I was walking out on stage, I felt it pop," Hamill said. "And every step I took, it fell lower and lower and lower."

"So you were a rapper!" Al joked.

"More than a rapper! They were around my knees by the time I got to the (podium)," Hamill said.

Hamill's calm under pressure drew compliments after the ceremony.

"After the show, Timothée Chalamet and Ed Norton came up to me and they said, 'Man, I got to hand it to you, that's a master class in professionalism,'" Hamill said. "I thought if I made a joke about it, it would bring more attention, and the director said, 'I'll never cut to the side where we could see your thighs.'"
