L.A. animal shelters waive adoption fees for Adopt-a-Pet Day

Los Angeles will commemorate the second annual California Adopt-a-Pet Day Saturday, joining more than 150 animal shelters across the state, by offering fee-waived adoptions.

The Department of Animal Services, also known as LAAS, will waive adoption fees for dogs and cats using a donation from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. To find the nearest animal shelter, got laanimalservices.com/.
Waived adoption fees for dogs four months and older does not cover a $20 license fee for city residents.
"We work closely and rely on the community, which includes our New Hope Partners, fosters and volunteers to help get the animals in our shelters out," said Annette Ramirez, interim general manager for LA Animal Services, in a statement.
"We're asking the community to adopt or foster to relieve the overcrowding we are experiencing, due to an increase in owner surrenders, as well as stray and injured animals coming in with nowhere else to go, which add to the animals already in our shelters," the statement continued.
Pets adopted from LA Animal Services are already spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped when they join their new families.
Adopters can also receive a Petco flyer with discounts to help make their pet adoption a success and a VCA Healthy Start Certificate, which provides up to $250 of follow-up veterinary care within the first 14 days of adoption. Additionally, dogs are eligible for free dog training classes with Paws for Life K9 Rescue at their People & Pet Innovation Center in Mission Hills.
The inaugural event last year resulted in 3,609 animals being adopting in one day -- outpacing the goal of 2,024 adoptions according to ASPCA. Event organizers aim to double the goal for 2025 with 5,000 pet adoptions.
"Choosing adoption is a powerful action that helps both animals and people -- in California and nationwide. When you adopt from a shelter, you're not just giving one animal a loving home -- you're also making room for another animal in need," said Matt Bershadker, president & CEO of ASPCA, in a statement released last month.
According to ASPCA, the organizations works with hundreds of shelters and rescues in communities throughout the U.S.
To keep the momentum going, LAAS will extend fee-waived adoptions for dogs and cats on Sunday with the help from a grant from Petco Love. The department has also scheduled reduced adoption fees on the weekends for the month, for the following events:
-- June 14-15: Celebrate Father's Day with a New Furry Friend;
-- June 21-22: The Pet Care Foundation's Basic Black Adoption Weekend; and
-- June 28-29: Summer Lovin' Adoption Weekend.
The department will provide the following reduced adoption fees for dogs, $51 (that does not include a $20 license fee for L.A. city residents); puppies $75; cats $12.50; and kittens $25.
