Swamp Princess in the Sky: Doechii Glows at Samsung’s S25 Edge Launch | PICs

*At 1,100 feet in the air, the only thing more elevated than the view was the energy—and the message. Perched atop Edge NYC , Samsung’s “ Live on the Edge ” recent celebration for the new Galaxy S25 Edge reached new heights, literally and culturally, with a powerhouse performance by Doechii —an artist who continues to redefine what a star can look and sound like.

She was born Jayla Ji ‘mya Hickmon and boasts the self-proclaimed title of “Swamp Princess,” a nod to her Floridian roots and unique persona. She has gained significant recognition in the music industry, including GRAMMY nominations and a victory in the Best Rap Album category.

Wearing a custom White Abyss look, Doechii commanded the night not just with her signature sound but with her presence: fierce, futuristic, and entirely her own.

As a dark-skinned, genre-bending woman thriving in spaces still gatekept by both industry and image, her set felt like a reclamation—and a revelation.

“There’s not enough chocolate sisters in the industry right now doing what she’s doing,” said Anthony Allred, Head of Talent at Complex, a culture-defining media platform known for spotlighting rising artists. “So she’s representing us well. And hopefully she inspires more people to embrace the value and beauty of our Chocolate Brown Queens.”

Doechi, who penned “Black Girl Memoir” on her debut album, Oh The Places You’ll Go released in 2020, shared, “I wrote this song specifically for Black women. As a dark-skinned woman, there’s a very unique experience I’m trying to internalize… This is dedicated to all the beautiful Black women in the room.”

This wasn’t Doechii’s first time proving her impact. At this year’s Billboard Women in Music Awards, she accepted the “Woman of the Year” honor with a fiery declaration:

“We are the creators, we are the executives, we are the innovators who are just as central to this industry as the men. Clock it!”

She brings that same energy to every stage—including this one, suspended above Manhattan. For Samsung, that’s exactly the point.

“Doechii embodies the bold, boundary-pushing creativity at the heart of the Galaxy S25 Edge,” said a Samsung executive. “She’s fearless, futuristic, and fully herself—just like this phone.”

And the phone itself? The S25 Edge is Samsung’s sleekest yet: ultra-thin, feather-light, and powered by next-gen Gemini AI.

But the launch didn’t feel like tech marketing—it felt like immersive theater.

Guests, including Jaden Smith , popular fashion designers LaQuan Smith , and Malik McIntrye were guided through a multi-sensory elevator experience before stepping into what was billed as a “swamp in the sky,” a lush, surreal performance space tailor-made for the self-proclaimed swamp princess.

“She’s been putting in the work for years,” Allred added. “I worked with her back when she was a baby artist at Complex. What you’re seeing now—this moment—this was earned. And she deserves all of it.”

Doechii’s rise has sparked debate from internet corners quick to question rapid success. But that noise fades in the face of real artistry and undeniable presence. With co-signs from Top Dawg Entertainment, awards piling up, and performances like this one, she’s not chasing the spotlight—she is the light.

If Samsung’s launch was meant to symbolize living on the edge of what’s possible, Doechii reminded the world that she’s already there. Not just elevating—soaring.
