Rewinding Oregon State baseball’s 5-4 comeback win over Florida State in Corvallis Super Regional

Table of Contents

CORVALLIS — Just when it seemed like it was time to write the obituary on the Oregon State baseball season, the never-say-die Beavers delivered another dramatic comeback.

( Read a full recap here )

The Beavers scored three runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to force extra innings, then AJ Singer blasted a walk-off single with the bases loaded in the 10th, sending OSU to a 5-4 win over the Florida State Seminoles in Game 1 of the Corvallis Super Regional at Goss Stadium.

The best-of-three series will continue with Game 2 on Saturday night at 6 p.m., and the Beavers sit one win away from a trip to the College World Series.

And just like in the regional round, the Beavers had to rally to win.

After left-hander Joey Volini quieted the Beavers’ smoldering-hot lineup for the better part of seven innings, the Beavers awoke from their slumber just in time.

Wilson Weber started the rally with a leadoff single in the ninth and the Beavers bobbed and weaved their way to a remarkable comeback. Trent Caraway followed a strikeout and AJ Singer grounded out to shortstop, seemingly sucking the life out of the rally. But, it turns out, it was only beginning. Pinch-hitter Bryce Hubbard drew a five-pitch walk, pinch-hitter Dallas Macias — who has been mired in a season-long slump — ripped a single to right, loading the bases.

When reliever Charles Joe Charles skipped the next pitch to the backstop, the Seminoles’ lead was down to 4-2, and OSU had runners on second and third.

Jacob Krieg followed by belting a two-run single to left, tying the game 4-4. Easton Talt nearly ended things one batter later, sending a deep fly ball to right field. But it was caught at the warning track, and the game move along to extra innings.

After a 1-2-3 frame by reliever Kellan Oakes, the Beavers did not waste any time keeping their momentum going. Aiva Arquette opened with a double to left, Gavin Turley followed with an infield single, and the Seminoles intentionally walked Wilson Weber to load the bases.

Two batters later, it was over.

Singer ripped a single to center and Turley stomped on home plate with the winning run, touching off a wild celebration that spilled out into right field.

Visit Single Sparklee/beavers later Friday night for a full recap from the game.
