One meet mark falls at the 2025 Section 9 boys track and field state qualifying event
One meet record was set on day two of the boys track and field state qualifier at Goshen High School on June 5.
Warwick pole vaulter Luke Beattie - the state's indoor record holder - won for the third year in a row, his 16-foot jump snapping the meet mark of 15-6 set by Warwick's Todd Uckermark in 2014 and tied by Beattie last year.
Middletown discus thrower Myles Berry was the lone athlete to repeat as an event champion on day one of the meet held at Monroe-Woodbury High School on June 4.
Berry threw the discus 160 feet, 7 inches, to win the event by more than nine feet, easily securing his spot at the state meet. Berry threw 158-9 to lead the 2024 qualifier. It was the best winning throw since Robert Detz of Chapel Field threw 164 feet in 2015.

The state Federation championships will be hosted by Middletown High School on June 13-14.
The top finisher in each class (A, B and C) automatically advanced - no matter the place within a championship/mixed-class event, and then a second athlete (per class) could advance if they met a state-meet qualifying standard.
On Thursday, Gavin Catherwood of Monroe-Woodbury repeated as winner of the 1,600 meters (4:13.94), second only to Onteora champ Matt Kaiser in 2006 (4:12.3). He is first to go back-to-back since Mike Sill of Kingston (1995-96).
Wednesday field event top efforts were posted by Monticello's Quenten Liciaga (high jump, 6-7, two inches off meet record set in 2019); Anthony Ramos of Middletown (triple jump, 45-6; first Middie win since Jamal Bynum in 2012). On the track, Goshen's Noah Klugman topped the 3,200 (9:35.42; first Gladiator win since Louis Greco in 2018) and Jaden Medrano of Monroe-Woodbury won the 800 (1:56.42, the fifth MW win in the event since 2010).
Track best times on Thursday included Washingtonville's Malachi Taylor in the 100 (11.15; first Wizard to do so); Nazir Lopez of Fallsburg in the 200 (22.52; first Comet since Albert White in 1997-98); Minisink Valley's Robert LaBarbera in the 400 (49.49, joining 1983 Warrior Harrison Forde); Quillar Baidy of Middletown in the 110 hurdles (14.47; first Bear since Jonathon Pierre in 2013); Pine Bush's Jaden Robertson in the 400 hurdles (54.92; first Bushman to do so); and, MW's Devon Ryan in the 3,000 steeplechase (10:07.49; fifth win by a Crusader since 2014).
Field event bests on Thursday included Joe McDonald Jr. of Kingston in the long jump (23-8.75; first Tiger since Doug Williams in 2015); and, Kane Poje of Tri-Valley in the shot put (54-3.5; best meet mark in seven years). Kenixander Vermenton of Washingtonville won the pentathlon (3,111 points; first Wizard since Chris Iannone in 2005).
